Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp Complete List of COs

Andy Sami Max
Nell Hachi Olaf
Grit Colin Eagle
Drake Jess Kanbei
Sonja Sensei Sturm
Flak Lash Adder
Hawke

CO powers in AW1 gives a global 10% attack and defense increase, whereas in AW2 it only increases defense.

Super Powers are exclusive to AW2.

Andy

Playable: Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

Regular Power: Hyper Repair

  • +2 HP Unit Restoration

Super: Hyper Upgrade

  • +5 HP Unit Restoration
  • +20 Firepower
  • +1 Movement Range

Strengths:

  • No weaknesses
  • Super gives a huge advantage
  • Power is low cost

Weakness:

  • No Day-to-Day abilities
  • No offensive/defensive boosts

Best situation to use:

As the first playable character, Andy acts as the most beginner-friendly CO of them all. As a result, as you unlock more COs, he becomes the more stale CO to use. However, he is a mechanic, therefore he is quite useful in keeping units alive for very little power cost while also giving infantry and mech units movement boost when his super is activated (AW2).

Sami

advertisement

Playable: Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

Regular Power: Double Time

  • +20 Firepower
  • +10 Defense
  • +1 Movement Range

Super: Victory March

  • +50 Firepower
  • +10 Defense
  • +2 Movement Range
  • Capture properties in a single turn, regardless of HP

Strengths:

  • Capture properties in a single turn, regardless of HP
    • Capture 50% faster than other COs
  • Foot soldiers (infantry, mech, etc...)

Weakness:

  • Weak Direct Combat units
    • 10% attack penalty
  • Slow charging Super

Best situation to use:

Sami is the best when it comes to foot soldiers. Therefore, the best situation when you would want to use her is when capturing any type of property such as cities and enemy HQ. If you can timely activate her slow-charging power, you can guarantee the next mission will be a breeze. Next time you have a map dominated by land terrain, don't discard Sami as your to go CO.

Max

Playable: Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

Regular Power: Max Force

  • +20 Firepower non-foot direct-combat units
  • +10 Defense all units
  • +1 Movement range non-foot direct-combat units

Super: Max Blast

advertisement

(Video) Advance Wars 1 Re-Boot Camp Gameplay Walkthrough - Mission 21A: Battle Mystery! (S Rank)
  • +40 Firepower non-foot direct-combat units
  • +10 Defense all units
  • +2 Movement range direct-combat units

Strengths:

  • Direct-combat units (excluding foot) get quite the boost
  • On top of direct-combat unit boost, he also gets movement boost with his power activated.

Weakness:

  • -1 range indirect units
  • -10% defense indirect units
  • Vulnerable to Fog of War

Best situation to use:

Tank aficionados should defintely use Max. Whereas Sami is the foot soldier specialist, Max is the tank specialist. Effectively going up against him requires a combination of favorable terrain landscape and sufficient amount of indirect combat units to counter him. For instance, a map dominated by sea landscape and a ton of battleships and artillery. Yeah, Max is quite the CO, and his direct-combat unit boost includes even aircrafts, making him go on par with Eagle's own specialty. A player/enemy with weak defense will suffer when going up against Max, as he blasts his way through.

However, the lack of strength in indirect unit and foot soldiers makes him vulnerable when playing with a map in fog of war. As you can recall, indirect units and foot soldiers thrive in a fog of war situation, where well-hidden rockets and artillery can deal heavy damage when not spotted.

Nell

AW1 Unlockable Requirement:

Complete 100% AW1 Campaign

Playable: Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

Regular Power: Lucky Star

  • Up to +60 Firepower
  • +10 Defense

Super: Lady Luck

  • Up to +100 Firepower
  • +10 Defense

Strengths:

advertisement

  • Any type of unit can get ridiculous amount of boost when power is activated.

Weakness:

  • Unreliable luck factor

Best situation to use:

Nell, your trusty guide that helped you through the basics in the tutorial missions, is also a playable CO. Lady luck herself relies on her greatest strength, being her greatest weakness. As her power implies, if you can get lucky and get the maximum boost it offers, then your enemy needs to brace themselves.

Hachi

AW2 Unlockable Requirement:

Complete 100% AW2 Campaign

Playable: Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

Regular Power: Barter

  • Cheap cost
  • 50% reduction on all deployment units in one turn

Super: Merchant Union

  • 50% reduction on all deplyment units in one turn
  • Turns cities into bases allowing for deployment in such grounds

Strengths:

  • Cheap regular power cost; 3 meters
  • Cheap unit cost

Weakness:

  • No offensive/defensive boost

Best situation to use:

Those Neo-Tanks look pretty sweet, right? If only they were cheaper...

Olaf

Playable: Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

Regular Power: Blizzard

  • Snow effect

Super: Winter Fury

  • Makes it snow for a single day
  • Deals 2 HP global damage to all enemy units

Strengths:

  • Ignores snow penalty

Weakness:

  • No Day-to-Day firepower increase
  • Rain slows him down

Best situation to use:

Olaf at first glance seems like another average CO, in the vein of Andy. However, just like snow, letting the a battle drag out with Olaf, will eventually kill you. Going against Olaf means ending the battle as soon as possible and using your CO's power before he uses his own power, especially Winter Fury.

Grit

Playable: Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

advertisement

Regular Power: Snipe Attack

Super: Super Snipe

Strengths:

Weakness:

Best situation to use:

An indirect-combat specialist, Grit can be a great counter to Max's direct combat prowess. Infantry in AW2 deals greater damage than AW1 so he can be quite the formidable foe, disregarding his direct combat units' reduced firepower.

Colin

Playable: Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

Regular Power: Gold Rush

  • 50% extra income
  • Cheap power cost

Super: Power of Money

  • 3% firepower increase, per every 1,000 funds available

advertisement

Strengths:

  • 20% cost reduction on units
  • Regular power costs only 2 meters

Weakness:

  • 10% reduction firepower

Best situation to use:

For Colin, money is power. While at first hand his reduced firepower might be a turn off, once his regular power is activated, just snatch that dream unit. If you thought Hachi's discounts was the only ticket to buy your heart's content, wait till you see Colin flying through with his money.

Eagle

Playable: Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

Regular Power: Lightning Drive

  • Only ~10% firepower increase on aircraft

Super: Lightning Strike

  • Allows every unit except for infantry to take extra turn
  • Units do not get reduced offense/defense like AW1

Strengths:

(Video) Advance Wars 2 Re-Boot Camp Gameplay Walkthrough - Mission 16: Factory Blues (S Rank)

  • Reduced fuel consumption for air units
  • Increased offense and defense for air units

Weakness:

  • Weak against naval units
  • Regular/Super very costly

advertisement

Best situation to use:

Eagle, just like the name implies, is an air specialist. Eagle has an advtnage in aircrafts and his double turn with his Super gives an edge to turn the tides of battle. However, the cost of his power is very expensive and can take a while to get his powers charged before you can even use them.

Drake

Playable: Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

Regular Power: Tsunami

  • Reduces fuel by 1
  • 1 HP damage to all units

Super: Typhoon

  • Reduces fuel by half
  • Hinders enemy movement
  • 2 HP damage to all units

Strengths:

  • Extra unit movement by 1 for naval units
  • 10% Defense Increase to naval units
  • Resistant to Rain

Weakness:

  • Reduced Firepower to Aircraft

Best situation to use:

Drake is a naval unit specialist and best case scenario he will be best when fighting in a water dominated lanscape, however, even then, if there are airports or possibility to craft aircrafts in such map, it is best to use another CO. Drake's fortitude is his Super Typhoon, so if you are inclined to use him, make sure to use Typhoon every chance you get to get that extra movement range to your naval units.
